Dissertation Summary

My dissertation reads a large and important body of late-medieval English literature, translations of the Bible from Latin into Middle English, in the context of the university culture of Latin biblical commentary from which those translations emerged. Working mostly from unpublished manuscript sources, I show not only that Latin commentaries influenced English translations--in the translators' choice of phrasing, in the interpretation of verses, or even in the inclusion of translated glosses--but that these translations themselves were conceptualized as part of the scholastic enterprise of interpretation. While these translations have long been considered to indicate 'proto-Protestant' tendencies in late-medieval England, I argue instead that they are an important part of orthodox academic exegesis in the later middle ages.
