Lapithos: the Upper Geometric Cemetery
423 South 13th Street Philadelphia, PA 19147 USA
Professor J. C. Wright
For my doctoral dissertation I am studying the unpublished material from the Upper Geometric cemetery at Lapithos, situated today in the occupied zone of northern Cyprus. The cemetery was excavated by the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology in 1931-32, under the direction of Bert Hodge Hill of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens. The general scope of this study is to look comprehensively at the Early Iron Age material from Lapithos, an important early city of Cyprus, in order to better understand its history within the general context of the island at this time. A more specific goal of my dissertation is to present a comprehensive contextual study of the burial assemblage of the Upper Geometric cemetery. My detailed study and publication of the cemetery and its material will allow scholars to refine the typology of Cypro-Geometric pottery and will provide them with a more complete picture of Geometric Lapithos.
